Digging in the dirt isn’t always a bad thing!

Using those muscles to claw that dirt, and sniffing for buried treasures can be extremely rewarding and very enriching for your dog.
And it’s a great way to burn off some extra energy!

Just…not in the garden, please?

Give your puppy a “Designated Digging Spot” where they can dig and bury things and dig to their heart’s content.

Hide delicious bones or favorite toys to find and swap in new ones to keep it new and exciting!

“But won’t that make them want to dig everywhere??”

Not at all!  Dogs can quickly distinguish right and wrong areas and it’s pretty simple to draw that line for them.

If your puppy begins digging elsewhere, simply catch them in the act and redirect them back to their digging spot. Spend a few seconds to help them discover a toy, and show them it’s much more fun to dig in their area.

Pretty soon your puppy will forgo the lawn and flower beds in preference for their awesome digging spot.

Add sand to  your dog’s digging spot to make clean-up easier and help your dog distinguish between the soil of a garden bed and his digging area.  Sand is also more fun for dogs to dig in, thus increasing your dog’s desire to dig in their spot.
